Pedego Edmonton

Some people spend their retirement slowing down. Kathy chose a different path—one lined with books, community connections, and the quiet hum of her Pedego e-bike. A retired pediatric nurse from Edmonton, Kathy has found a unique way to combine her love of helping others with her passion for cycling.

Around her neighbourhood, she's affectionately known as "the Book Fairy," and for good reason. "I’m fortunate," Kathy says. "The area I live in has many shared-use, car-free pathways that connect the neighbourhoods. We also have many kind people who have installed Little Free Libraries."

These small community book-sharing boxes have become the foundation of Kathy's retirement project. Friends, neighbours, and community members donate gently used books, and Kathy takes it from there. Loading up her Pedego with stories waiting for new readers, she pedals from library to library, making sure the shelves stay stocked and inviting.

Most of the books she delivers are children's books—a natural fit for someone who spent her career caring for young patients—but she also shares novels, non-fiction titles, and other treasures for readers of all ages. The reward comes in the simple moments. "I love riding by and seeing the libraries in use," Kathy says. It's easy to understand why. Every book placed on a shelf has the potential to spark a child's imagination, inspire a new hobby, or simply brighten someone's day.

Why a Pedego Is Perfect for the Job

Kathy's book-sharing mission wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable without her Pedego e-bike. Collecting and distributing books means carrying extra weight, often across multiple neighbourhoods. The electric assist makes it easy to transport boxes and bags of books without worrying about hills, distance, or fatigue.

Instead of focusing on the effort of the ride, Kathy can focus on the purpose behind it. The comfortable riding position, reliable battery range, and cargo-carrying capability make a Pedego an ideal companion for community projects like hers.

Whether she's making a quick stop at a nearby library or spending the afternoon visiting several locations, her bike allows her to travel efficiently while enjoying Edmonton's beautiful pathway network. Unlike a car, a Pedego lets Kathy fully experience the neighbourhoods she serves. She can stop to chat with residents, check on library inventories, and enjoy the scenery along the way. The journey becomes just as meaningful as the destination.

More Than a Bike Ride

What makes Kathy's story special isn't just the books or the bike—it's the spirit of community behind both. Every donated book represents generosity. Every Little Free Library represents trust. Every ride represents a commitment to making a neighbourhood a little more connected and a little more welcoming. As Kathy pedals from one library to the next, she's doing more than delivering books. She's helping create opportunities for discovery, learning, and connection. And thanks to her Pedego, she can keep spreading that magic one ride—and one book—at a time.

In Edmonton, if you happen to spot a cyclist delivering books to Little Free Libraries, there's a good chance you've just seen the Book Fairy at work.
